    Teaching difficult points:

    2. How to make the structures of the two speeches clear to the students.

    3. How to enable the students to find the solution to make short speeches, with the help of brief illustrations.

    Teaching methods:

    1. Enjoying the song -- Television and having a discussion before reading to arouse the students’ interest in this topic.

    2. Scanning to look for the phrases and skimming to get the general ideas.

    3. Further reading to get detailed information and analyze the structures of speeches.

    4. Radiant thinking to develop the students’ creative and comprehensive abilities.

    Teaching procedures:

    Step 1: Lead-in

    1. Listen to an English song -- Television, and ask:

A beautiful song, is it? What’s its name?

    Do you like watching TV?

How long do you usually watch TV?

    2. Show some pictures and explain what couch potatoes are.

Couch potatoes refer to people who spend too much time sitting and watching television.

    3. Tell them what I’m worried about.

Recently, it worries me that my little daughter has become a small couch potato. She’s only four. Can television damage her health?

Yesterday, by chance I got this article –

    Television can damage your health

Let’s read it together, OK? I’m sure you will help me find the solution later!

    Step 2: Scanning

Let’s scan for words and phrases, such as – I think, besides, however...

If you find one, shout it out.

    I believe (that)…

    In addition, …

    Finally, …

    What’s worse, …

    I feel sure (that)…

    Moreover, …

As far as sb. / sth. is concerned, …

    I am confident (that)…

So many phrases! Why are they used in the article? In a while, you will get the answer.

    Step 3: Word study

    1. Let’s learn new words!

(1). The new law restricts the sale of hand guns. (line 2)

    A. extremely good; wonderful B. ordinary; common

(8). Her lectures were always stimulating and covered many subjects. (line 50)

    A. boring and tiring B. exciting and full of new ideas

    2. Let’s read these new words!

    Step 4: Skimming

Read the passage quickly to answer the questions:

What is the motion proposed in the debate?

How many speakers are mentioned? Who are they?

    Step 5: Further reading

Analyze the structures of the two speeches by asking the following questions one by one and showing them some pictures when or where necessary.

    Speech 1 -- proposer's opinion

As far as Rowena Yin is concerned, why should we also be warned about the dangers of television viewing?

(Because television can damage our mental and physical health)

What damage can television viewing cause to children’s health?

(Headache, shortsighted, inactivity and snacking... – all these are called physical damage) (show some pictures)

[When the students have shown great interest in the pictures, ask them

    two more questions:

What advice does the proposer give to these “couch potatoes”?

(Daily exercises, good and nutritious food, enough sleep…)

    (show several more pictures)

So please remember: The first wealth is health.

    - Emerson

After looking at the scenes on television, what will children

do in society? (Speech 1 Para3)

(write the answers on the blackboard) ]

What measures does she think should be taken to prevent television from damaging children’s health?

(Restrictions should be put on…, limit broadcast time, advise parents on…)

    Speech 2 -- opposer's opinion

In Geoffrey Tang’s opinion, why shouldn’t people restrict the television viewing? (Para 1)

(the beneficial effects on our lives; cannot take away people’s right to…)

Then what kind of tool is television? What can children learn from the programs they watch? (Para 2)

(A marvelous educational tool. outside world, Science, maths, current affairs…, entertainment)

What does he think of the restrictions? And how does he describe children’s programmes? (Para 1, 2)

    Step 6: Consolidation

After analyzing the structures of the two speeches, can you answer this question?

Why are these phrases used in the article?

(It is quite clear for us to use such phrases to state opinions and give supporting reasons while making speeches.)

    Step 7: Radiant thinking

    1. Questions

    2. Discussion

Can you find a solution for them to reach an agreement?

    3. Make a speech

    I believe (that)…

    In addition, …

    Finally, …

    What’s worse, …

    I feel sure (that)…

    Moreover, …

As far as sb./sth. is concerned, …

    I am confident (that)…

Suppose you are the third speaker. Based on your solution, make the third speech, using the above words and phrases.

    Step 6: Homework

Write your speech in your composition book.

The design of the writing on the Blackboard:

    Television can damage your health

After looking at the scenes on

television, what will children do in

    society? (Speech 1 Para3)

    easily think it’s normal...

    become immune to...

    copy the characters...

    commit suicide

    one crime too many
