    Unit 17 Life in the future

    Step 1 Revision

    1. Check the homework exercises.

    1. Ask the students a few random questions to revise future time and introduce the topic of the unit.

    Step 2. Presentation

    Ask questions about the picture, and get the students to tell what they think is happening. Teah the new words: majority, goods, industry. Read the instruction aloud.

    Step 3. Reading

    Ask the students to read the dialogure silently and find out the this information: what is being planned at this company? Allow the students a few moments to carry out the task. Check the answer. ( a new factory may be built.) See if the students ca guess the meaning of out of work.

    Step 4. Dialogue

    1. Play the tape of the dialogue for the students to listen and follow. Go through the dialogue briefly and make sure the students understand it. Ask questions like these:

    1) What are people at the company talking about?

    2) Who is going to make the decision>

    3) Why does the company need to build a new factory?

    4) What is the difficulty?

    5) Why do some people want the factory to be built? Why are some people against the new factory?

    2. Play the tape again. This time let the students listen and repeat.

    2. Then ask the students to practise in pairs.

    3. Ask one pair to act out in front of the class.

    Step 5. Language points

    1. Do you think our manager is going to have a new factory built? People have been talking of it a lot recently.

    1) to have a new factory built, have +名詞+過去分詞,表示叫某人做某事,或某事得以做成。

    John is going to have his coat made to his own measure.

    The nurse will have your temperature taken.

    Last year our family had some money saved.

    2) have been taken, 現在完成進行時,其結構是have/has+v-ing,表示現在以前這段時間里一直進行的動作,這個動作可能仍在進行,也可能停止了一會。

    ---- Where have you been? What have you been doing?

    ---- I have been sitting in the next room all afternoon.

    Children have been watching TV after school.

    I have been working as a teacher in Xiaoxian Middle School since I graduated from college.

    1. The problem is finding land for it.

    Her job is cooking and washing.

    Her full time job is laying eggs at home.

    2. But some people do not want good farm land to be built on.

    John didn’t like himself to be praised like that.

    I will go to Beijing. Do you have anything to be taken to your parents?

    He wanted this topic to be talked about.

    She expected he children to be looked after by her mother.

    Step 6. Practice

    Part 2. Demonstrate how to make sentences from the table, then get a few students to make example sentences. Then let the students do this exercise in pairs. At the end get the students to write down 5 sentences from this table in their exercise book.

    Step 7. Workbook

    1. Do Ex.1 orally first, then write the answers in the exercise books.

    2. Exx.2 and 3 should be done in pairs first. Then check the answers with the class. Get the students to translate the sentences into Chinese and ask them to think if they will be able to put them back into English. Pay attention to the sentence structures.

    3. When doing Ex.4, warn the students not to do word for word translation. Special attention should be paid to the sentence patterns and word order.

    Step 8. Consolidation

    Write the phrases on the blackboard and ask the students to make up a dialogue: I believe you are right. What are the problems then? What do you think is likely to happen?

    A: I think the company will buy more land.

    B: I believe you are right.

    A: But isn’t likely that the manager will make a decision soon.

    B: What are the problems then?

    Homework

    Finish off all the exercises. Do Ex.1 and part of Ex.4 as written work.

    Play the tape of the dialogue for the ss to listen and follow.Ask more questions about the dialogue.

    Why are some people against the new factory?

    If you are the manager of the company,what are you going to deo ?

    Play the tape again.This time the ss listen and repeat.

    Books closed. Ask the ss to retell the dialogue with their owner words.if necessary,help them and deal with some language problems.

    Books open. Get the ss to read the dialogue in pairs.Then ask one pair to read act.

    Step V Practice

    Part 2 Get the ss to understand these sentences:

    Get the ss to make sentences from the table.
