    Teaching Steps

    Step 1 Focus on reading comprehension.

    1. Introduce the new words. Make sure students can read these words correctly.

    2. Go over the two dialogues as quickly as possible and then finish the following reading comprehension exercise.

    True or false exercise

    ① Mary and Lizzy have exactly zoo invitations to send out.

    ② The medical conference will possibly be held after 6 a.m. on the 26th.

    ③ Mary and will work in the same company.

    ④ Maybe will is a workmate of pat.

    Step 2. Fous on listening and speaking

    1. Play the tape of the dialogue twice for students to follow and immitate.

    2. Pair work

    Two students sitting next to each other can form a pair and practice the dialogue.

    3. Performance.

    Invite as many pairs as possible to perform before the class if time permits. Remember to give encouragement.

    For the second dialogue, students are encouraged to have free dialogue by replacing certain words such as "Capital Buses", "Pat", "she", "office", "Mary" and 6674044. Here is a suggested one.

    Xiao Yan: Hello. Senior class one classroom.

    Wang Qiang: Heool, Could I speak to Da Gang, please?

    XY : Hold on please. [Look around the classroom.] I'm sorry. He is not in the classroom right now. Can I take a message?

    WQ: Yes. This is the school office. Can you ask him to come to my place after lunch, Please?

    XY: Does she have your number?

    In doing this exercise, teachers can go around the class to give whatever help to the students. Later, choose some pairs to perform before the class.

    Step 3. Finish part 3, Lesson 97

    Here is a suggested dialogue.

    A: Hello. Is that the x company?

    B: Yes, this is the x company.

    A: Could I speak to Y; please?

    B: Hold on, please. I'm sorry. He is not here now. Can I take a message?

    A: Yes. This is A speaking. Can you ask him to ring me back, please?

    B: Does he have your number?

    A: Perhaps not. It's 7058927

    B: 7058927. I'll ask him to call you. Goodbye.

    A: Bye.

    Step 4 Do all the exercises on the workbook. Remember to explain the use of what and How white doing exercise 3.

    Lesson 98

    Teaching steps:

    Step 1. Students go over the words of this unit.

    Step 2. Do exercise 4 on the workbook.

    Step 3. Reading comprehension

    Students read the text as quickly as possible, then do Ex 1 on the workbook.

    Step 4. Listening and understanding.

    Play the tape of lesson 98 for students to listen to in order to understand the text better.

    Step 5. Performance. (Speaking Practice)

    This step will be finished in the form of group work.

    In the text, there are altogether 3 persons who gives the direct speech. In the 4-person group, 3 students can act as Dr. Baker, one of those who know Dr. Baker and the organizer of the conference. The rest student can read the rest of the text.

    Step 6. Grammar

    Let students pick out the sentences which include model verbs and study the sentences.

    Here are the sentences:

    ① You must be joking.

    ② You can't be serious.

    ③ That may be so.

    Tell students that we have have different ways to express “可能”、“不可能” and “一定、肯定”in English.

    Step 7 Finish Ex 3 on the workbook which is actually a summary of the text and which can help students to understand the text better.

    Step 8 Teachers explain whatever students find difficult to understand if necessary.

    Lesson 99

    Teaching Steps

    Step 1

    Students go over the words of this unit.

    Step 2 Reading Comprehension

    Students go over the text quickly and then do Ex.1 on the workbook.

    Step 3 Listening Practice

    Play the tape of lesson 99 for students to listen and repeat.

    Step 4. Performance (Speaking Practice)

    Divide students into 3-person groups and give performance according to the text. One serves as Dr Baker, one as the organizer and the other can read the rest of the text.

    Step 5. Grammar

    1. Study Part 2 and do Part 3.

    First students do part 3 in an individual way. Then pair work to check whether they have done correctly. At the same time some student can be invited to write their sentences on the blackboard.

    Later teacher may ask student to give their comments and explanation. At last, teacher may give a summary.

    2. Do Ex.4 on the workbook

    Step 6

    Teacher explains whatever asked by students. Students finish Ex.2 and 3 on the workbook.

    Lesson 100

    Teaching steps

    Step 1. Listening Practice.

    Let students listen to the tape 3 times and finish the exercises on the workbook.

    Step 2. Do part 2 of Lesson 100

    Let students study the given complete sentence in each sentence. Try to understand the implied information and decide which model verb to use. Students may do it first individually and then pair work.

    Step 3 Writing

    1. let students go over the text first and find the answer to the 3 points given.

    2. Close the book and write the summary without rreferring to the original text alone.

    3. Students exchange what they have written. This can be done in pair work or group work.

    A suggested version:

    The 199… Medical Conference was held in London. Dr Baker was invited to go to the conference because of the carelessness of somebody. Actually he was not the person to be incited. At the meeting, Dr Lively, who was going to give a talk, failed to come because of bad weather. So the organizer asked Dr Baker, Who was considered to be Dr. P Baker, to give a talk instead. Later it was found out that Dr Baker studied the same field as Dr. Lively. So he gave a talk on ENT which, later, was well receivel.
