　　現(xiàn)代意義上的母親節(jié)起源于美國，由安娜·瑪麗·賈維斯女士發(fā)起，她終身未婚，一直陪伴在她母親身邊。1907年，賈維斯寫信給西弗吉尼亞州格拉夫頓的安德魯斯循道圣公會教堂，請求為她已逝世2周年的母親做特別追思禮拜，她母親生前為這一教堂的星期日學校服務了20多年。

　　1908年，教堂宣布賈維斯母親忌日——5月的第二個星期日為母親節(jié)。賈維斯組織了一個母親節(jié)委員會，開始大規(guī)模宣傳，呼吁將母親節(jié)定為法定假日。1910年，西弗吉尼亞州成為美國第一個慶祝母親節(jié)的州。
