大衛，一名普通的男孩。在他出生前父親便已去世，留下年輕的母親和保姆來照顧這個小家伙。雖然沒得到過父愛，但在大人們的精心呵護下，大衛擁有了一段美好的童年。直到一天，母親與一位男士相愛，大衛有了一個繼父，一切都改變了。繼父象魔鬼，貪婪兇狠，繼父的姐姐也是個鐵石心腸的人。溫暖的家變得如冰窖般寒冷，很快大衛的母親在他們姐弟的折磨下病逝了，大衛輟學做了童工。
在此期間，大衛有幸逃了出去，投奔了姨婆貝西。在貝西與狄克先生的幫助下，大衛得到了良好的教育，并與故人重逢。雖然飽經磨難，但善良、正直的品質一直留在大衛的身上。在接受死亡與分別的洗禮后，大衛在事業上有所成就，并收獲了溫馨的愛情。
與狄更斯的另一部作品《霧都孤兒》相比，它更加完美，不僅帶有青年時的憤慨，更多了幾分成熟，也更加貼近現實。無論孩童時代的大衛，還是青年時代的大衛，身上那股韌勁令人贊嘆。如果換成我，我也能象大衛這樣嗎?面對兇狠的繼父我會保持冷靜嗎?在經歷那么多失敗，我還會擁有希望嗎?我覺得我很難做到。
從大衛的身上我看到，在危難之中，擁有樂觀的心態是多么的重要，只有這樣，我們才能成為那逆風飛翔的蝶。其實成功離我并不遙遠，只要堅持追求，總能將他捉住，而我卻常常畏懼失敗，不敢向前。今后無論遇到怎樣的困難，我一定以大衛為榜樣，做一株看似柔弱，但歷經風雨永不彎曲的青竹!
